I have a duffel bag, not completely sure what fabric it's made of but, on my way home from college my friend's laundry detergent spilled all over it and i dont know how to clean it. The detergent soaked through the fabric and out of fear of it being attacked by insects once i take it back to my dorm room because of its smell i really want to clean it but i'm not sure how. And its not a small machine washable duffle bag. its a big rolling one...

rinse it outside with a hose

Take the bag out side and rinse several times with a hose. This should take care of the detergent and unless the bag is leather it should be fine. Let it dry outside and the fresh air will help with any odors.

You need to wash it by hand. There is the bath method and the shower method. You will probably end up doing both.

The shower method is either in the bathroom shower, or just hose it off outside. Maybe this is the first step to getting most of the soap out.

The bath method will allow the water to seep into the fabric and soak more of the soap out. For this, use the bathtub, or fill a clean garbage can with hose water, swishing and dunking to rinse it out. Repeat as much as needed to get all the soap rinsed out.

If it's not made of something that will be damaged by water (like leather, for example) I would take the risk and just hose it off really, really well, and then put it some place where it can dry. Hang it outside in the sun if it's warm where you are, or hang it in the basement where it can drip and not make a mess (or put a bucket or tub under it), or put it in the bath tub.

At this point, if it's not usable, it's essentially useless unless you can remove the detergent, so why not try it?

The only way to remove it faster, is to remove the carpeting and wash it. Let it air dry. If it is not removable, then you have to wash and rinse till it all comes out. The bright side is that the car should smell good.

Put it in the washer...... if your not sure what it is made of run a cold cycle.
Most anything can be washed in cold with no bad effects other then being clean.

Best of luck
