Is it true that urban pigeons host more pathogens and parasites than rats?

Yes. Tuberculosis, scabies, psittacosis, salmonella and much, much more. I think the only thing's rats have that pigeons don't is Weill's disease. Disgusting things. Ick.

Actually I haven't heard of anybody I know of getting a disease from either. I know it is possible, but it doesn't seem very frequent in a town with decent sanitation. A while back I asked the Dept of Health in Los Angeles about the illnesses carried by rats, and was told that in L.A. they didn't have any history of people getting diseases from rats.
Of course both can be a nuisance in other ways. I think rats actually do more damage (pigeons can't gnaw or get inside buildings very easily). Personally I'm allergic to rats. I've had pet rats and I like rodents, but a high population of rats in a building not only stinks, it makes me sneeze a lot.

I took an injured one in to my garage last year (wearing gloves).

However I had to kill it next day as vet wouldn't do anything for it.

I placed it infront of me, head away, and drove a spade down on it's neck. It made me feel sad.

Yes - revolting things. They also do major damage to masonary on buildings.

my rat is a pet rat and is clean...well he smells but i don't think he's diseased.
