The answer would be both C, and D.
You were never sure who your enemy was over there, by day people would work on our military bases, fight in the South Vietnamese army, and by night they would fight for the Vietcong, laying mines, committing sabotage, and murdering individual American, and Vietnamese soldiers, as well as anyone who openly supported the cause of the South Vietnamese government.

I'm pretty sure they called them the Vietcong. Even after they became the National Liberation Front, we still called them the Vietcong.

The People's Liberation Armed Forces (PLAF), more popularly known as the Viet Cong (VC), (Vietnamese Communist guerrillas ) who were from the south and made up of civillians into a guerrilla army far harder to fight against as you never knew who was VC and who were just ordinary civilians trying to keep out of the war The VC were organized into three levels: regular forces operating under the command of the southern communist leadership, full time guerrillas organized into companies serving under provincial leadership and finally, a part time self-defense militia, composed of units organized into squads and platoons used primarily for village defense. Primarily, the VC were guerrillasThey wore no uniforms, dressed in the same type of clothing as the local peasants, and blended into the landscape when their mission was complete

It is C. It was a name given to the north meaning Vietnamese Communists in Vietnamese. C, not D.
EDIT
Blah blah blah, this is a text book question everyone and the textbook answer is C. CCCCCccccc
EDIT
If there were south Vietnamese that fought for the Northern Army (which there was) it still means they were fighting the Northern Army. C

All of these answers are wrong; The real answer is the Vietcong were made up of guerrillas from the band of rebels, run by a guerrilla rebel leader, by the name of HO Chi Mien.
Ho Chi Mien was nothing more then a bandit leader like the rest of them, he was financed and armed, by the Chinese communists and, the Russians to wage an all out war against the Democratic government of South Vietnam.
I was there in '66 and '65 with the Northern Hmong fighting and teaching them how to use weapons we gave them, to fight back against these rebels.
It was however to much, the Chinese communists and the Russians came in, we actually saw the Russians and we were defenseless against there numbers.
We ran, fighting all the way to the South Blowing bridges and roads, fighting for our lives against these rebels.
They were not an official Army, they were rebels and armed bandits.
