1. Open Network Connections.

2. Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and then click Next.

3. Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.

4. Click Setup my connection manually, and then click Next.

5. Click Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password.

In Internet Explorer on the menu bar -
go to Tools> Internet Options - Click on the Connections tab -
Then click the Lan Settings button and unckeck automatically connect.

Answers 1&2 relate to Internet Explorer only and many programs will still connect to the internet.For total control one needs a good firewall.I would suggest Zonealarm Pro or Comodo as the best freeware alternative.Good luck!!http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Comodo_Firewall_Pro/1132729513/1

as above or...........tools/internet options/connections/put dot in never dial a connection. Don't worry, it will dial when you ask it to.
