Has a seldom heard of college football team ever broken out of obscurity to be ranked for the first time, climb the rankings, and pull off a national title the first time in the hunt? I am refering to South Florida's current run for the BCS Championship. If anyone can provide any info as to the highest position obtained by a first time ranked team, and if a first time ranked team ever made it all the way it would be greatly appreciated.

my guess would be the university of chicago in 1905. eventhough the coach Amos A. Stagg was pretty well known, and he had been there for a long time, it was the only time that team had ever been to a championship. During the 1800's to the early 1900's, Yale and Princeton had been dominating college football.
After the AP polls had been established in the 1930's, (1936), Carnige Tech made it to #6 only to never reach the polls again.
I don't know if I answered your question but this would be my guess.

I don't believe it's happened in at least 50 years or so. Obviously, it was easier in the early days of football when there weren't very many teams. South Florida has only had a football team for about 10 years. Incredible that they're already #2 in the country. And what's more incredible is that they really look like possibly the best team in the country. Haven't seen too much of them, but what I've seen is very impressive.

Only traditional powers have won the BCS. Before that, I remember BYU backing into a championship in 84. They were the only team unbeaten.

No...It hasn't happenned...Strength of schedule will hurt South Florida in the end...They'll be in a bowl, but not the championship game...They won't be taken seriously against the likes of Ohio State or whoever...
