I think the GTA series is far less impressionable then most believe it to be, but the fact is there's no way that, say, a 12-year old should be allowed to touch the game, though I think being under 18 isn't enough of a reason to stop someone from playing something if you don't feel the game is innapropriate.
Still, you should have tried it yourself first. It was a pretty bad idea to let your 9 year old son play it.

Ive been playing the game since it first came out. and as graphics evolved and details were more expressed i still understood that it was all just a game. that it is wrong to go out in real life and try to do what your game character do what it did in the game. I'm 21 years old now, and suffer no consequences from it. i enjoyed the game just as my brother and i have been playing it for years, and not once have we tried to imitate what happens in the game. there are parents to keep an eye out for their children and to notice anything that may get out of hand. tell them that its just a game and that what they do in the game does not apply to real life. video games teach cooperation and hand eye coordination. helps stimulate the brain into thinking about consequences and situations. just read the box, play a little your self and talk to them.

depends on how your children react after playing it. If they are out of control after playing it, don't let them play it.
Also, remind your kids that its just a game, and that they can't do that sort of thing in real life.

There's a rating system for a reason, and you need to pay attention to it.
