As a kid an allowence was something we would EARN. It wasn't just given. We had housework or yardwork that needed to be done. If it was done, we would get some money. If we didn't do it, NO MONEY. It was only like one dollar or so. BUT my parents didn't make a whole bunch of money either. They both worked two jobs each and had a house (mortage) as well as SIX kids to feed. OH, we also all went to a catholic school so there was money needed for that too. But I got a job delivering newspapers, and as soon as I was able to handle picking up bales of hays I got a job at the local farm. Spend, CIGS And or anything else I wanted. Parent did make me put some in the bank.

In the 60's I was becoming a teen, I don't recall getting an allowance but I do recall getting a job in about 1968 at a supermarket to earn spending money. What did I spend it on was the usual, fast food, clothes and various other things.

Wow, that's my grandmother's time! I can't say for myself as my parents weren't even born yet. But I asked my grandmother, and she told me that she did get an allowance. And it was about $200-300 a month and she would spend it when she goes shopping with her mom [my great grandmother] or with her friends. She says she usually buys clothes, shoes and accessories like necklaces and earrings. She would also go to the movies too. And she saves what shes left with after spending. Which she used some to buy a car.

in jr high, I'd get ten cents a day for milk money and a buck & a quater a week for bus tickets what i didn't spend for milk or bus fare I could put in my discreinary fund. For the really big bucks, i'd do chores for neighbors: mowing grass, shoveling snow, personal shopper. By high school i had a real job, part time working on a small horse farm.

Yes,....I got a dollar a day to buy my school lunch, which would be under a dollar,(Jr.High school)and in High School I got $3 dollars a day, again to eat on and buy gas,I drove at 16 to HS...
My folks gave me $10 bucks on the weekends, and more($20-30) if all my chores for the week were done by friday night...
On weekends my best friend and I went downtown to hang out,
Most my money went on clothing, shoes etc..or going to Movie theatres, concerts, car races ,rodeos, parties...etc..

Yes. $2.00 for each task completed correctly ... mow lawn, keep room clean, housework (dusting, sweeping, etc), dishes (actually, I only got paid $2.00 for doing the dishes all week)
I saved most of it.
