The sport or pastime that is THE most popular in England is Fishing. More people actually take part than in any other. I suppose soccer is the most popular sport although I am a rugby fan having played to a high level and refereed to a fairly high level. The World Cup final should be a great match and the wonderful thing about rugby is that who ever wins or loses there is never any real ill feeling, especially among the fans. The different fans sit together and have a great time. After the game they will all drink and have a great time together.

Most watched is Football (proper stuff not American)
Most participated in is fishing
Though at the minute you would think the whole country were life long rugby fans with the number of bandwagon jumpers that have got on to the success of England.
They'll disappear again soon and be in hiding for 4 years.

In England it's competitive Morris dancing
Current champions are the 'Stafford Jollymen', with 'Snodland Wanderers', just a few point below, in second place.
The all-England MDC (Morris dancing championship) cup is due on 3 rd of January, in Thaxted, and it looks like being a real grudge match this year...
I think the whole day is being broadcast live on Sky Sports, so that's definitely one not to miss.

In Germany it's Football/ Soccer, I think Formula One is quite popular too, as well as Handball - I love soccer and F1
In Ireland it's Gaelic Football and Hurling that are most popular, though many Irish like English soccer teams becuase all teh best Irish players play over there
I think in Italy it's soccer and Formula 1, too - Italians may correct me

I understand that the most popular sport in England is angling, although soccer is the national game.
