My Dear Brother, you have asked a very good question and i think every young man or woman goes through this experience atleast once in his or her lifetime. The first two options you suggested should never be practiced. If the person who is being called an idiot has really not done anything to deserve such shouts then his or her silence or non-retaliation would help the senior person realize his or her mistake. When people around you see that you are being shouted at for no fault of yours they may eventually step in to support you. When you feel you have got the support from your staff, only then should you go over the head of your senior and report the matter to higher authorities. It may be that your senior is suffering from some psychological problems in his personal life and that may be because you are a warm and friendly person he vents out all his anger and frustrations on you. My friend have patience, this is an opportunity for you for becoming a patient, humble and forgiving human being. Those who point our faults even when we have committed no fault have much to loose as a human being but by being forgiving and controlling your anger you will definitely become a better human being than him. All The Best My Friend.

Don't say anything....because later you might discover that he was right about something you never suspected.... that has happened to me, and then I discovered how young I was, and how the elders really do know things, although I do wonder about "loudly in front of all", that really is embarrassing ....... take it as a blessing from the Lord, no matter how crusty the remark seems at the time, just keep your silence out of respect for the elders, and as soon as you can, walk away, thanking him in your heart.........older people do know the strangest things!

Smile, try to cool him down if he's hot under the collar and walk away. I'm already considered a senior, who knows what I'll be like when I'm old ?

Management? Where were you? If he is an employee somewhere and displayed that type of rude behavior, I would report him. But, calling someone a name back or beating them doesn't accomplish anything.

your retort: "hard dealing with idiots all day huh. I know the feeling"
when you give a reply that doesn't "push back" you actually diffuse a situation and you don't come off looking like the idiot he called you trying to defend yourself.

being that he was a old man and i knew or felt, that i was not at fault, i would do nothing, except maybe walk away. I would chalk it up to, the fact that he was a senior and possibly suffering from Alzheimer's disease or the on slaught of an old age disease.

Why do you ask? Has this
happened to you? What were
the circumstances? Were
you really being an idiot?
If so, instead of making an
issue of it, why not just say,
"I'm sorry sir" and walk away.

Ha HA..
I will first look at myself again... Do I have my pents on? Do I smell odd? Did I spoke something that does sound wrong?
...If YES (there is something wrong with me), I will say SORRY and make correction
...if NO (everything is right) then I will try to say ME?

As a aged person if he done like this infront of all people you don't give reply to him later he will find that there is no mistake of you and he will say sorry to you and effection on yourself increased by him. then afterwards he will be a good friend to you. at certain age they will think internally and it is good for you.

You do not awknowledge in any way that he is even there, because if you respond to his rantings --- then he has controlled your actions. ( Usually management would step in to remove the person causing the uproar ) .
