Dravid can shift his tempo as needed. His recent ODI scores in England suggested that he can be a clean hitter of the ball when required. The No. 4 batsman builds on the runs made by the openers. It basically maintains the tempo of the game during the middle overs when scoring is slow as opposed to the first 15 and last 10 overs when hitters (openers and lower middle order batsman come in). Dravid is known to keep the scoreboard ticking and is also plays a good anchor for the other batsman to carry on with their hitting. Yuvraj Singh is a hitter compared to Dravid the consolidator. He is suited to no 5 or 6 who can take more liberty in hitting as compared to No. 3 or 4 who are there to see the innings through for the most part. Pathan was sent in to keep the innings flowing but when Pathan went down it was time to preserve the clean hitters for the last 10 overs of the Indian innings and that's why Dravid was sent in at 4. Yuvi could've hit some good shots but would've risked his wicket and gotten out earlier. Well things didn't go the way they were supposed to and Dravid and Yuvraj got out early. Hope this helps

Since openers had given a very good foundation, the need of the hour was to score some quick runs. That was the reason why Dravid was not sent at No. 3 as he is not generallhy a good hitter.

Though Sachin and Ganguly got a good partnership they took half the overs(140 in 25 overs)making things difficult for the rest to score 177 in 25 overs.
I would have sent Zaheer khan to have a go at that stage.

On hindsight, it appeared a bad decision, but it was more natural decision based on the circumstances, as they did not need to accelerate at that point.
