We more or less know what the current political hot-button issues are in the USA: abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research, Intelligent Design in science classrooms. What is it about hot button issues that makes them hot button issues, while things like health care and social security are generally NOT considered hot button issues even though they are vigorously debated just as often?

Let's get into that a bit further...abortion and gay marriage does not directly affect their opponents.

They are all symptoms of an ill society. Those that wish to return to healthier times and those enjoying the sickness are complete opposites in a non-bending mindset so these sorts of issues cannot ever be agreed on (thus becoming “hot button”).

Hot button issues those that evoke an emotional response, and rational debate and evidence does not change anyone's mind. The other requirement is that opinion is evenly or almost evenly split. Slavery is not hot button in the modern US even though we have an emotional response, because we all agree, but in the past it was. The commonalities among these issues is mostly religions belief and interpretation of the bible but gay marriage has opponents outside or of this group and some inside this group support stem cell research.

No those are extremely subjects that impact all individuals. via fact that abortion became right into a controversy long in the previous the conflict in Iraq, you relatively can't say it relatively is a distraction. the completed gay Marriage element became into commencing in the previous the conflict besides. Stem cellular study it relatively is a somewhat present day undertaking. No i do no longer think of that any of them are a distraction. I adamatly have faith that Abortion is homicide, Marriage is to be in common terms between one guy and one lady, and being gay IS a decision. i don't have each and all of the information on Stem cellular study. What I do understand is that Embryonic stem cells are no longer the only sort, you will get stem cells from fatty tissues besides. If it relatively is authentic then i'm no longer adverse to stem cellular study, as long as embryos are no longer used.

Hot button issues usually tend to be things that Americans see as directly impacting them or their opinions. They somehow end up always being issues that people are either giddy and gung-ho about or extremely resentful of. So when politicians either contradict or support one, there's always going to be one group of people to have an obnoxious field-day over it and one group who obnoxiously applauds it, and henceforth, this is the main reason as to why American politics is so petty and divided.

Political parties all fight on abortion, gay marriage and stem cell research but forget to help alleviate most of the people from poverty.

Hot button issues usually involve someone's basic feelings of what is right vs. wrong, good vs. evil. Socialized health care, while I believe is horrible, is not inherrently evil, whereas I believe abortion is. See the difference? Hope this helps.

The hottest issue in the US today is the war in Iraq.

The social issues you mention are hot to a small part of the society. The war affects everyone because of the economic damage it is doing to the country and our dollar, and because the immorality of the war reflects on us all.
