Like many countries before and since, after shedding their oppressors who kept arbitrary lines of unity, they were free to make their own decisions and ended up dividing. The main thing they may have had in common before then is the same oppressive ruler and with that now gone, they had little in common. Pakistan, Sir Lanka, Bangladesh (took until 1971). Mostly by religious beliefs, with 3 religions in the area, Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu. Lot of minorities were uprooted and there was violence.
