1) The Japanese girl was tired of being treated differently because she was deaf & thought having sex would help her feel "normal."

2) The American tourists were afraid to continue driving because they thought they were an easy target on the road. They thought they might have been targeted by terrorists.

The bus driver also decided to stop at the closest town for medical help since the nearest hospital was so far away.

3) The boy w/ the rifle seems to have been shot because he took a shot at the police.

4) The Mexican nanny & her charges had the necessary papers to cross the border so that wasn't going to be a problem for them until their driver got drunk & someone else w/o papers tried to drive them home.

What I couldn't figure out was why the American couple couldn't send some relative to help their nanny take care of the kids. Sure, they didn't expect to get shot but they were far away & didn't leave any back up for the nanny. What if the nanny had gotten sick? Or what if they had been delayed for a more mundane reason?

Bluff makes a good point. That's what made the film interesting to me.

the main purpose of the movie was also about how separated we are by language. and how close we are through our actions. the Japanese father was the one that gave the gun to the father of the boys that shot the woman from the U.S.

I hated it, too. It's seriously the worst and most boring movie I've ever seen.
