The team I work for is finally trying to re-invent their promotions and intermission activities. What are some things that you enjoy seeing as a fan, while you wait for the action on the ice to start again? Do you have any ideas for a good intermission? Keep in mind that the team runs on a minor league budget.

I think so of our best ones have been where people have fallen down. We have mites teams come but there is a limited amount due to our small market.

Off the top of my head, with a limited budget, the best I have seen crowds react to is:
1) Goalie races. Have four staff members or volunteers dress up in goaltender equipment (hopefully they have their own or can borrow). They skate a lap of the ice. The catch - they all try to take each other out.
2) Dash for cash (? I don't remember what we called it). Get one contestant, blind fold him/her, and place them at one of the faceoff circles. Have a prize (say a stuffed bag with a money symbol on it) located somewhere on the other side of the ice. Instruct the crowd to cheer when the contestant is going the right way and boo if the contestant is going the wrong way. Kind of like hot and cold.
3) Kids Know Best/Newly Wed Game. Pick two contestants. Ask one contestant 3 questions about him/herself (other contestant cannot hear), this contestant will write the answers on a poster board. Bring both contestants out during the intermission and ask the other contestant the same questions. Sample question = Who is [contestant 1]'s favorite player?, or if its Newly Wed, you can make it somewhat tricky like "Where was you're first kiss?"
4) Mini-Games. Now this can really be a plus for your organization. Let the players in for free, but sell tickets to the family and friends. This is a win-win. Team up with a hockey association in your area and its sure to be a great investment. Girls, boys -- ages from 3-10... its gets a little too old after that.
Even if the contestants get it wrong, give them a prize anyway. Not necessarily the grand prize, but don't let them walk away empty handed :)

I've been a fan of minor league hockey for years but I don't often sit through the intermission activities. Our team has all sorts of great intermission activities (including cheerleaders, which I hate but the guys and kids enjoy) but the one thing that's always been really fun to watch is when they put people on a GIANT slingshot and send them sliding across the ice. THAT is fun to watch!

Mites on ice is a fan favorite everywhere. This works on a couple of levels. First, local kids get a chance to skate in an arena in front of thousands of people. Second, mom and dad are thrilled to see the kids skate in an arena in front of thousands of people. Third, you can have them sell a pre-set number of tickets in order to participate. It costs the organization nothing and has other people hawking their tickets for them to boot. The fans always give the kids a lot of support.
Another thing you can do is get a bunch of college kids to run around and shoot/throw t-shirts into the crowd. You can partner with local companies to offset the cost of the shirts. Team logo goes on the front, sponsor logos on the back. The kids can be paid minimum wage or even for free if you can work out an internship with a school. The only other thing you need for this would be some of those water balloon sling shots which run about $10 each.

ok here are some ideas
Chuck-A-Puck: By some of those cheap-*** sponge pucks, set a target and center ice, person who's puck lands closest to the target gets an autographed jersey
Pee-Wee scrimmage: Coaches and kids would jump at the chance to have that much exposure for their team and the best way to keep hockey fans happy is...well....hockey
Mascot: Have him shoot out T-shirts, mess with the zamboni driver, interact with the fans
Buffalo Wing Eating Contest: Nothing better then seeing 2 grown men wolf down blazing hot buffalo wings, and if 1 hurls the fans enjoy it even more, winner gets a jersey, or some other type team paraphernalia

ya...I like to see the little kids get out on the ice...it is so cute and funny. Having a figure skater or trick skater is so lame. Hockey players and figure skaters have a long feud going on and would BOO any figure skater out there. I'm sure the GUYS would love to see some hot girls bouncing around. I think most people go pee or grab something to eat/drink during intermission.

Intermissions are made to go to the restroom and then go grab another beer.
But for cheap and fun entertainment, nothing beats getting the little tikes who are just learning to skate out on the ice for a 5 minute scrimmage. It's a thrill for the kids, fun for fans to watch, and parents are willing to come check out a game just to see their kids.

A NHL intermission is 20 minutes and the OHL intermission is 10 minutes same with the AHL.

i like the mights on ice thing...the crowd who sticks around gets a kick out of it cheering when the kid scores or makes a nice save. also, as juan said, parents come to the games, and kids can become fans of that team if they go to the game before their already a fan of another team.
which team do you work for?

hockey fans like fast paced action and consist mostly of men. a bad-a** iceskating mascot or iceskating cheerleaders would work. an impressive trick skater is always cool to see too.
The guy below me, Juan, is on to something. Id love to see that.
