Have you ever seen a boxing match? You know the chicks in bikinis that hold up the round cards? That's what I wanted to be.

From ages 4-10, I wanted to be a paleontologist and go to the Gobi Desert, where I would work with Roy Chapman Andrews. I didn't know that it had been quite awhile since he'd been there, but the book I received for Christmas told me about how he had discovered fossils. I focused on the sciences, going through two microscopes and doing a ton of reading about paleontology, archaeology, and basic science.
Next, I wanted to be a parapsychologist, and I held onto this dream till I was near graduation. Then, I discovered that I would have to go to college in Arizona or down south since this was an uncommon subject.
I never stopped studying these subjects. I simply kept adding more interests all the while. As soon as I learned to read and write at 4, before I started school, I started writing stories and poetry, dreaming that someday I would be a published author.
What is amazing is that I grew up in the Fifties and Sixties, a time when girls and women were expected to be housewives and mothers and were limited in what jobs they were allowed to have. My mother and father never limited me or my sister; they never said, "You can't be a scientist. You can't be a writer." In our family (both sides), we were made to believe that we could be what we wanted to be but that it was OK if we didn't reach those goals. Maybe it's because both sides were not that long away from Ireland, some of their predecessors having coming to America as boundchildren, offering themselves as servants to people who would pay for their passage. They instilled pride in our past and in ourselves.
Woah! I got carried away there, didn't I? I definitely need to go to bed!

When I was 6 or 7 I wanted to be just like my teacher and teach.
When I discovered boys and everything that goes
with being a teen, I wanted to be a model or a rock star.
I am here to say......
I am none of those things.
