Hey,

I have a 8500GT and I'm thinking of upgrading and
I don't want to spend a lot of money on a 8800gts or a 8800gtx.

My motherboard (Asus P5K) supports 2 16* pci-e graphics cards so I am thinking of buying another one.
I was just wondering if anyone knew what gets better performance.

A) Two 8500GT's (512mb)
B) 8800GTS

Also is over clocking your graphics card worth doing?
My friends computer screwed up because he over clocked his 8800GTX.

Assuming 2 ea 8500GT in SLI mode is twice as fast a one.

NVIDIA 8500GT FRAPS=17.5
Two NVIDIA 8500GT in SLI mode FRAPS=35
NVIDIA 8800GTX FRAPS=115.8

115.5/35 = 3.3 ; (3.3 - 1)x100% = 230% faster.

Therefore a single 8800GTX is 220% faster than two 8500GT in SLI mode.

NVIDIA 8800GTS FRAPS=102.2
102.2/35 = 2.92 ; 192% faster

Therefore a single 8800GTS is 192% faster than two 8500GT in SLI mode.

FRAPS (frames per second) per

NVIDIA 8500GT ($59) FRAPS=17.5
NVIDIA 8800GTS ($270) FRAPS=102.2
NVIDIA 8800GTX ($490+) FRAPS=115.8

A. 2x 8500GT= 2x16 stream processors = 32 stream processors; memory interface =128bits

B. 8800GTS = 1x 96 stream processors; memory interface = 320bits

It is VERY CLEAR that even a quad SLI of "A" won't really get far. And it does not look nice to put a pair of cheapo 8500GT on a new ASUS P5K. Wow factor goes down the drain.

Overclocking is worth doing especially on low clocked variants. What is most important is that you know and fully understand what you are doing. And overclocking per se does not damage cpu or gpu, it is the HEAT. That is why superb COOLING is the key to great overclocks.

I've overclocked my factory overclocked (600mhz core/1600mhz) 8600 GT up to 690/1760 just for 3D benchmarking. For games, I run it at stock clock or at 650/1700. It's doing fine. But of course it's got a Zalman cooler and I have a well ventilated case.

Not sure what to tell you. I'd type in 8800 versus 8500 sli in google and see what you can fine. Or just type in benchmarks for both separately and see what you find.

Overclocking is worth it, you just can't push it super hard and you need a QUALITY power supply like Enermax or something. Video cards fry a lot easier than just your main processor when you push them. But a lot of people use extra cooling (like water cooling) to run more voltage. The air coolers generally just use better heat paste or in the extreme case put on a new cooler. It's best to learn slowly and carefully and then just doing it.

Even a fast 8600 series would spank a pair of 8500s, according to what's in Tom's Hardware Guide.

I would choose option B.

The 8500GT is a poor card even when running in SLI.

Any 8800 series card would completely destroy any 2 8500 series cards in SLI.

well sli technology using 2 graphic cards adds about 10-20 percent of perfomance. So it depends on Your chosen graphic cards.
