It is true we behave differently with different people and in different situations but in essence we remain the same. The wearing of different masks is necessitated by different roles we are expected to play--a mother, a mate, a daughter, a sister, daughter-in-law or a friend. I show a different aspect in every relationship but the core is constant, unvarying...

On April 13th 2004 I realized I had been wearing masks all my life so I put into words what I thought about it
Masks
My closet is full of many masks
I can choose to wear.
For my true face
I would never share.
Each day I awaken
I look to see which mask I want to put on me.
Which one do I want to choose?
Do I want to make people laugh today?
Do I want to console someone
who has had a loss?
Do I want to act wild and free?
It is so very hard not to show the real me.
People do not want to see
what lies deeply in me.
My pain I keep hidden away, showing the world what
they want to see.
My masks are to make people's lives better.
That is what I want them to see.
I always put the world before me.
I am no one when I stand alone
but my masks are made intricately
to fill the voids people have within them,
to take away any sad feelings they have within their hearts.
For my quest in life has always been
to bring happiness and love to people around me.

Of course. Many things have been written using this same metaphor. But as far as a mask that we like. There is a difference between being fake adn wearing a mask. Sometimes you need act certain ways according to who you are with but in some ways i think it is showing respect. Like if i go to chruch im not going to be making jokes and rough housing. Its not appropriate.

You are right. We must learn to wear different mask when we deal with different people. There isn't any mask that is universal and can fit every situation.

That is ego.
Ego is always looking for acknowledgement, identification and is competitive.
When one masters the ego, or drops it, and lives from the heart, then one is straight and true.
One can bend with the wind, but is straight and strong with who they know they are, like the oak.

On the Shogun miniseries they busted a line about the Japanese having seperate hearts in their head, tongue, chest, and the true one, deep inside. (Or something like that.)
It's not just a Japanese thing.
