Because America is a superpower, and has spent its resources, for several decades, on trying to run the world, not on caring for its people.
The present war in Iraq is a good example, costing billions of dollars every month, and driving the govt deep into debt. A bill that costs a small fraction of that amount to provide health care for some children has been vetoed by Bush as being "too expensive".
The insurance and war industries have done a good job of giving people lots of propaganda as to why we shouldn't spend money on a health care system. You can see some of the results of this from some of the posts here.

Because they do not like having to pay taxes. Selfishness is at the heart of all American decisions.

The NHS is not "poor healthcare" at all and its a lifeline for those who would not be able to afford private medical fees or insurance premiums, excesses etc. You can still choose to pay for private healthcare in the UK if you have the money so its not a question of people not having the "choice".

And surely America is the only country in the Western world where a child dies of a toot abcess because her parents cannot afford to pay for her treatment? Barbaric.

I guess those posters above arguing about how much better their private system is are financially well off

Dan K - you are talking through your ****! I'm sorry but Noone "dies before receiving treatment" in the UK - thats utter crap! Who the hell told you that? Also people are not treated on a "first come first served" basis but as regards their need - urgent cases are always put before non urgent and lastly why the HELL would anyone from the UK bother flying to America for private treatment when we have a private healthcare system here in the UK? If you are wealthy and don't want to wait for the NHS you go to a private doctor right here in the UK.

You are full of crap! Where the hell do you get your "information" from?!?!?

It is because the U.S. would be driven to bankrupcy. We already have too many nomadic types getting handouts from government programs. Close to twenty million here are provided for yet do not pay into the system. The free healthcare you praise is a burden on most of Europe and Canada as it is. Many in these countries come here for serious health problems (surgery, cancer care, etc.) though. This is because each of the aforementioned do not prioritize and people are taken care of on a first-come, first-serve basis. Many die before they receive necessary treatment as well. As someone who works in a hospital environment, I can tell you that hundreds from these countries come here when they need immediate/serious care. Free health care is nothing more than a political agenda in America with proponents exclaiming its virtues only for votes!

Because we give all of our extra money to poor countries who claim everyone over there is starving to death. If that is so, then why do they produce a child a year? Oh, and because we love the way you thank us. I suppose it's never occurred to you that there are millions of hungry people in America who are working hard to feed your families and provide them with wonderful health care.

Better question: Why would some people consider having America adopt a system that is working horribly in other countries? They can't afford it, and it's resulting in poor medical care.

Europe has a "free" healthcare system?

The United States is rich because we do not tax ourselves into the ground to support "free" healthcare.

If we did sign on for that "free" system, we would have an inferior healthcare system and we would no longer be rich.

It would be a lose/lose situation.

Because there is no such thing as free health care.
