The metal will deform at any load. If the load is less than the yield point, the deformation is elastic, meaning the deformation (elongation) is proportional to stress, and returns to zero if the stress is removed. Beyond the yield point, the relation between stress and elongation (strain) becomes non-linear and inelastic (plastic), meaning the deformation is permanent.
