I wouldn't call them long lost friends, but yeah, I've run into people that know me that I don't remember.
I usually get through it without them ever realizing through very careful wordplay.
My personal experience is that women don't seem to notice if you don't use their name, so just act natural and as though you know them while not asking any questions that could give away that you have no idea who they are. Ask things like "Wow, it's been so long. Jeees, where WAS the last place we saw each other?" and that sort of thing to get clues.
Guys tend to look for name recognition, but can usually be side tracked with a generic name like boss, buddy, man, or guy... "Hey Boss, how are you doing? Man, it's been a while buddy." Etc etc etc.

Yep. It worse when I don't know who they are. When they are hugging me and talking to me. I am a pretty honest person and I usually say "hey, you know how I always forget names, man, I cannot remember what your name is....?" then they tell me. I hug them. But after they leave I am really messed up because I don't know who they are, where I know them from, anything. It's a bad feeling. It can easily ruin a good day. Sometimes I'll think about it for a week or two. It leaves me in the question and I'm not one to like that. I like to leave the question. Welcome back amigo!!!

That happen only once to me. My cousin came to visit. I have not seen him in 15 years. When he came to my house, I opened the door - did not have a CLUE who he was! He had to tell me his FULL NAME before I figured out that he was my cousin!
THAT was awkard!!

I can't imagine... knowing so many people to where that would happen.
I actually used to remember every face of every person I came within sight of... but after so many years my job takes up most of my memory capacity.
