I have a pretty cheap beginner acoustic now and have been playing with it for awhile now and am ready for an upgrade. I play for an audience at least once a week and am looking for a good quality acoustic guitar with a rich sound. Which brand or model would be best?

Valdis K has hit the nail on the head, man. The other cool thing about a used guitar is that the wood has had some aging time - something you don't get with a new guitar - to help mellow the sound. As guitars age, the cellulose structure of the wood changes to give richer and warmer tone to the output of the instrument. That's why older guitars are prized by musicians. If you do want a new guitar, and who doesn't? The best bang for the buck out there right now is either Ibanez or Washburn, and both have MANY models from which to choose. Have you thought about an acoustic with onboard electronics?

Screw the recommendations. Go to the store, and *play* a bunch of them. Buy the one that sounds and plays the best in your price range. And don't forget to check any used instruments - you can get a good deal on a great guitar that way.

(Yes, sounds *and* plays - it's pointless to shell out $3,000 for a great-sounding Martin if the neck is a shape that drives you batty. If it doesn't *feel* right, your musicianship will suffer, and you'll actually sound *worse* on the $3000 Martin than you do on a $200 guitar that "feels like you".

Martin DM and have them install a thin line gold plus pick up, be about 600-700 for the guitar and another hundred for the pick up....comes with a life-time warranty.( and they actually honor it, a friend of mine had a 24 year old martin and a fret popped out, and they fixed it)
