I have worked for my current employer for a little over 2 years. I have applied for Head Cashier 10 times, Front End Supervisor twice and a transfer to another deptartment once. I was interviewed 1 time, 2 years ago this month for Head Cashier. Since then I have not been interviewed and barely acknowledged for the other 12 attempts. All of the positions I applied for, were posted in the break room with the added notation "Internal Job openings". When I asked what that means, I was told that those jobs are for current associates only. 6 of the 10 times I applied for Head cashier, people were hired off the street and I wasnt interviewed. The 2 times I applied for Front End Supervisor, I was told in order to be the FES, you have to be a Head Cashier atleast 6 months. The lady that was promoted was never a head cashier. The 1 time I applied for another dept I was asked by that supervisor. The HR manager hired 2 people and didnt interview me. I am at a loss as to what to do.

you sound to me like a pretty meek and mild type person willing to let other people dictate your destiny to you. WATZ UP WIT DAT?!

if you have the education and the work experience and you've been keeping up with the times with seminars and all of the news your craft has to offer, magazines and such, this is homework. hedging your bet,as it were.

having done all of this, you need style and grace along with that assertiveness i mentioned. you need to display a discretion that should have people noticing a thriving success rate.

the dead poets' society cited a little phrase as a main theme "carpe diem"....seize the day. this is the kind of hunger you must emanate if you are to escape that pigeon hole that you seem to be stuck in.
oh, and you might have a look at this.

It is a difficult issue.

Generally businesses try to find the most suitable person for a job. They will look both inside and outside for the right person.

Personally I think someone in the company has it in for you. They have decided they don't want you in a responsible position and whenever there is a job openning that person will say "no way" when they ask about you. This may be the case because you are good at what you do and they don't want you promoted.

Anwyay, don't give up, but consider moving to a new job (When they ask why are you leaving the current job, you say the company doesn't promote internally and does appear to promote fairly... mentioning examples other than yourself).

that kind of sounds like something personal, i am a cashier and was passed over a few times for head cashier but now i am working in the office and i do all of the things a head cashier does but i just haven't gotten the full training i have noticed that its all politics, a person someone likes will get head cashier before someone who is more quiet etc. but if you are not union there isn't much to do about it, you should look for a new job and if you are union speak to your union rep about it

Quit making it so obvious you hate where you are. You have pretty well burned your bridges where you are. I would suggest looking elsewhere. And when you get there wait at least 6 months before trying to get out of your job.
