I had a math test today, and I'm not sure about this question.

x/8 + x/9 = 6

Can this be solved, and if so, what's the answer? Thanks a bunch.

x/8 + x/9 = 6
(9x/72) + (8x/72) = 6
(9x + 8x)/72 = 6
9x + 8x = 6 * 72
17x = 432
x = 432/17

this is NOT a polynomial. i hope you got it right on the test.

Just for future reference:

In mathematics, a polynomial is an expression that is constructed from one variable or more variables and constants, using only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and constant positive whole number exponents.
x^2 + 4x + 7 is a polynomial. Note in particular that division by an expression containing a variable is not generally allowed in polynomials.

Polynomials are built from terms called monomials, which consist of a constant (called the coefficient) multiplied by one or more variables (these are usually represented by letters). Each variable may have a constant positive whole number exponent.

Some elementary properties of polynomials
A sum of polynomials is a polynomial
A product of polynomials is a polynomial

(9x+8x)/72 = 432/72
add like terms then drop denominators
17x=432
x=432/17~ 25.4
this is an equation not a polynomial
polynomials look like such:
x^2+3x-5
hope you got it right

Andy got it right but you might want to take it one step further instead of leaving it in fraction form..
In which case:

x= 432/17
x= 25 & 7/17
