we most of the time independents that vote independent take votes away from ppl meaning the first bush got beat by Clinton because 16% voted for perot . you cant vote in primaries ussaly and alot of times you have no one to vote for at all because there is no other canidate and if there is its some wack job like perot that not many ppl vote for , if you want your vote to really matter pick a party that makes most sense to you. just remember though not all republicans are crazy chistians and not all democrats are crazy left wing liars . so do research on each canidate and make your choise on what fits your life. you can always change it when you go get your liecence renewed

If you live in a closed or semi-closed primary state, it means that you only get to vote in the primary of that party. Of course, in most such states, outside of the presidential primary (which might be non-binding for your party), most of the "minor" established parties struggle to get one candidate to file for office at the local level much less the two or more that it takes to have a competitive primary.
If you live in an open primary state, party registration is pretty much meaningless (and several open primary states do not have party registration).

Then you can only vote for that party's candidates in a primary election.
In a general election, your party declaration doesn't matter - you can vote for a member of any party for any position.

You add just a little bit more power to the party you join. And if you decide to work at it a little, you may be able to make a difference.
