Diamond, though pure carbon, is considered a mineral. It is a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which is the hardest. There are a couple of substances harder than diamond, but they are not found in nature.

Diamond is the hardest known mineral. Many people might mention the Moh's hardness scale ( http://www.24carat.co.uk/hardnessmohsscaleframe.html ) Where diamond is the highest at number ten. It might be interesting to know that being #10 is not a linear measure on this scale, and it is much harder than #9, corundum.

The diamond still the hardest. Drillers used diamonds head to pierce thru any kind of hard materials. Oil explorator were using diamonds head to drill beneath the ground surfaces and subsurfaces. Imagine drilling kilometers or miles down deep the earth passing through different hard layers of rocks and other hard substances.
