I have to do a History Day project for school. We have to choose an important historical event and do research and a project on it. We have to include its historical sigficance and why it is important today. We can present our project by making a documentary, skit, website or have a display board. I am in a group of three and I need some ideas. Many people are doing theirs on the Holocaust and Women's Rights, or Civil Rights. Any other good topics?

The rennisance, (only, spell it properly in your report) and the rise of humanism.

the industrial revolution. - large scale production becoming the dominant form or production, introduction of factories.

the Guttenberg printing press and movable type (again, if you present this topic, you may want to spell 'guttenberg' properly)

the birth of computers - charles babbage's difference engine, the enigma machine, ENIAC and Mark II, DARPA and the internet (yahoo ansers would be VERY different without the internet :P)

future shock - a book/idea by Toffler about how technology moves faster than culture, and how we dont know how to deal with it.

what country are you from? this makes a big difference on what events are important.
Independance day doesn't have much significance for the Brittish, and the "Refus Global" has little significance outside of French Canadian culture.

Please--the Iraq War is like a drop in the bucket compared to even recent conflicts like Vietnam, which permanently transformed the American psyche and gave rise to major social movements in the US--without a draft, forget about wars having real impacts on social structure.

To answer this question, here are some ideas:

1. The invention of antibiotics: This completely transformed human life in terms of expected life-spans and quality of life; enormous in every way.

2. World War One: This resulted in the destruction of European monarchies/old empires and the creation of numerous new forms of government and nation states (one example is communism in formerly royal Russia).

3. The Great Depression: This resulted in social legislation/liberal socio-economic policies still influencing world politics to this day.

4. WW2: This destroyed the imperial power of Europe and Japan and put the US and Soviet Union at the forefront of the world stage.

5. The Vietnam War: This ended the US' policy of "containment" and resulted in major social upheavals in the US.

6. The invention of the pill: If you want an edgy report, birth control pills totally transformed sexual mores in the 1960s and may have tragically paved the way for the increased spread of STDs in the 1970s and 1980s.

7. The invention of the Internet: Just think about how small the world really is now.

Guessing that you may be an American, here's my suggestion :
Beginning in the 1930s, the U.S. has added social programs to help the poor, the sick, the unemployed, and the old people in society. You could look at Social Security, Unemployment benefits, Medicare, Medicaid. or Welfare. I would pick Medicare myself (because of my medical background), but you might prefer another. You can't cover them all.
These entitlement programs do a lot of good, but they are very expensive. Your generation, the younger people, will be saddled with paying for these more and more as older people retire and expect social security checks and health care which now includes prescription coverage. These programs have a HUGE impact on society and should be a major concern for you and your classmates. Now is a good time to look into the history of these and begin to understand how we got into this obligation to pay so many people for so many things with our (and eventually YOUR) taxes.
Good luck with your group project!

Very nice question! 1. Murder/Rape 2. Sexism & The Body Image Girls Look Up To 3. Government - (Immigration, President, War, Economy) 4. Out of Control Children 5. Drugs 6. Pollution/Global Warming I have no idea how to fix them. I just wish all the parents in the world would care about their children, and I wish drugs were only made possible in medicine and every medication had to have a prescription. I wish people would stop burning garbage and see the cloud-like billows of smoke they're sending in the air. I wish people would fess up to global warming, and that the parents would actually care enough about their kids to prevent them from dying from it in the future. I wish everything was perfect. Don't we all?

I would suggest either the Holocaust or better yet, the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed. That lured us out of isolationism and into a world war (once again).

Or how about the start of the Protestant Reformation? It changed the way people looked at the church as well as their own relationship with God.
