I recently sent a cloak to a dry cleaners from the 1020's that had metal on the collar and jewels. Gabardine wool outside and satin lining. I worry that it will be damaged, but that is not my question entirely.

What is the dry cleaning process and how might it affect my garment in that process?

I meant to state the cloak was from the 1920's, not the 1020's. Sorry for the typo.

Dry cleaning always is stressful to a fabric just by the fact that it is a solvent based cleaner. However, a cleaners that uses good quality materials and cleaning agents, should be able to clean the cloak well with minimal wear.

As for the embellishments, most high quality cleaners will do one of two things with a garment's ornaments (jewels). They will either remove them when possible and have their tailro re-sew them back on OR they will cover them with a removable tape to prevent chemical damage. Best of luck.
