Forget the charting......this is an honest answer to your question...give me a thumbs down if you want to but I hate not expressing my feelings about this issue because I tried for 3 yrs before becoming pregnant and I actually tried the charting method before I knocked it..I don't want to see anyone have to go through trying that long and wondering why isn't anything happening ... so here goes...
According to my fertility specialist, charting temps and looking for EWCM is a flawed method because- anything such as slight fever, illness or infection raise your temp and EWCM can be present in ovulating women and at various times of your cycle.. not necessarily just at ovulation. The method is based on how a woman's body is supposed to act during her cycle, but every woman is different and if your cycles are not precise, the method will be that much harder to interpret. I have the book "Taking charge of Your fertility" and the software that goes with it.. I tried charting for months and following the method and even the software could not keep up with my body.
I love the ClearBlue Easy fertility Monitor and I would definitely invest in that or the OPK's. Using the monitor and the OPK's confirmed that I did not ovulate month after month when the charting method and software suggested i was ovulating a lot.
The best way to try is to have sex every other day between days 9 -22 .. you will be covered if you O early or a little later and sperm will live in your body anywhere from 3 days to 1 week. If your partner abstains from any ejaculation that day in between it will help build up his sperm count again. Lay still for at least 10-15 mins after sex and don't get too hung up on the specific day of ovulation. Trying every other day will ensure that you will have sperm available for when the egg drops.
You want to have sex before, during and after ovulation not just during ovulation and what a lot of people do not realize is that when they see that spike ..ovulation may already have occurred.. have fun..have a lot of sex.. you'll have a happy husband and better chances if you just throw away that thermometer and just go for it..
ever wonder why some people get pregnant without trying..I swear it is because they had sex before and during ovulation and they weren't worried about one specific day.
I learned a lot going through infertility and one of the things I learned was that charting is not as great it sounds and is more complex than people know..it would be more enjoyable, easier and maximize your chances if you just have sex often throughout your cycle beginning as soon as you stop bleeding..
Lots of luck and baby dust!

I haven't tried it myself.. but thats because I have trouble reaching my cervix so I don't think I could tell if it was 'high' or 'low', lol.. .I have to bear down to even get that sucker within reach! The nose description is what I've always heard, perhaps the lips is how it feels when its 'soft'? My cervix is kind of sensitive though, I find pap smears very painful so I don't like to mess with it too much. Maybe you are sensitive too and thats why you felt the cramp after? I used to have Mirena and had to check for the strings once a month so had to get used to feeling that cervix. Oh, I'm also paranoid that I'll accidentally give myself an infection by not doing a good enough job washing my hands first... I do my best, but you know, just one of those fears... I don't need anything else going on down there, you know? :) Good luck, curious to see the other answers, sorry I don't have much direct experience with this

It is not a guarantee that you have or are going to ovulate. It is a sign that you body is fertile (egg white CM is very similar to seminal fluid and nourishes the sperm and allows it to pass through the cervix and a high and soft cervix puts it as close as it's going to get to the vaginal opening to increase odds of getting sperm to enter). But, this is a different (but related) issue to ovulation. That is solely determined by your ovaries and different hormones. The only way to tell if you have ovulated is either through ultrasound or by taking your basal body temperature (BBT) daily. You have to start doing your BBT at the beginning of a cycle and it might take a cycle or two to get the hang of it but it can show you how everything works together. I suggest the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler (http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Charge-Your-Fertility-Reproductive/dp/0060937645). I also suggest the website www.fertilityfriend.com
It is very possible for your body to show signs of being fertile without actually ovulating in a cycle and then getting your period.

There is no guarantee, but the egg like CM is a very good sign of ovulation. It is made to be slicker than regular CM so the sperm can travel easier when the egg comes from the ovary.

i don't know about cervical position but mucus indicates that ovulation is coming. it is an easier way for me to track ovulation than bbt. for 2 years almost i have used cervical mucus as an indication for birth control
