in other words... If we start with a cell that has 24 chromosomes or 12 pairs, how many chromosomes will be found in the two cells that are produced at the end of the cell cycle?

If it is mitosis, the daughter cells will contain 24, just like the parent cell.

Each cell will have 24 chromosomes (12 pairs), so the total for two cells is 48 (24 pairs).
