According to the recent Smithsonian Institution book "Volcanoes of the World", there are about 1511 volcanoes that are considered active. There are many dramatic looking volcanoes - such as Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh that are ancient and dead. There are also many volcanoes on the ocean floor (especially in the Western Pacific).
