Nuclear power plants are expensive and there is a very limited amount of nuclear fuel around. Breeder reactors can generate more fuel but that could lead to proliferation of nuclear weapons. They are very clean--the amount of waste generated is small, but the waste is very dangerous and needs to be stored securely.

Coal is cheap and relatively abundant, but it's very dangerous to mine and it generates lots of pollution. Additionally, it is perhaps the biggest contributer of carbon dioxide, which causes global warming.

Nuclear power plants produce a lot of energy for a price that is comparable to coal. They produce steam from the towers. However, they produce a lot of nuclear waste, which has become a problem to store. The Yucca Mountain repository s slated for opening in 2010 (not the best idea though).

Coal fired plants produce a lot of energy for not a lot of money. There's also a ot of coal left compared to other forms of fossil fuels. However, they produce very dirty exhaust that contributes to smog and acid rains. Scrubbers on the stack help, but does not completely alleviate the problem.
