Many dance styles don't match the years the songs were popular.

They are dancing to the beat of the music, not the year the song was popular.

Last week in some "behind the scenes" footage they showed the teams being given their music immediately after the elimination show. They have no say in the music they dance to so they shouldn't be penalized for it.
I do agree that often the music doesn't seem to match the dance. I remember in Season 2 or 3 a Latin dance to a Bon Jovi song.

I don't know that the necessarily give higher scores for it, but I like it when they do their ballroom/latin dances to more current/"hip" music. I think it will help bring ballroom dancing to a younger crowd and revive it. Ballroom dancing is really great for couples or for singles to meet someone. If they always dance to the typically music it will stay as a classic dance and its existence will fade away eventually.

They don't care. they aren't judging the choreographers, just the dancers. And they just want their paycheck
