Joe R hit the nail on the head. The ancient Greeks lived by the "Doctrine of the golden mean". Simply stated means nothing in excess. A good example is the scale of political philosophy. Most tend to think of it as linear. A line from one extreme to another. The far left on one end and the far right on the other. It is not. It is a circle. The far right and the far left are together at the bottom of the circle with but a very thin line separating them. Think of the uni bomber, Theodore Kazinski-far left and Timothy McVey-far right who bombed the federal building in Oklahoma city. Another good example are the extremes of sexism. Is there really any difference between a "male chauvinist pig" and a female chauvinist sow"? they are simply two sides of the same coin. If you are too narrow minded it is very easy to miss the obvious.

i'm not gonna call narrow mindenest (new word?) a problem. it is a certain train of thought, if one, believes that the word toe-mat- toe means 2-mate-o (tomato) i'll live with it. the ones that can't i would look out for. one needs to look at all areas of humanity and see that we have all came from different cultures , beliefs, and not to mention our great "parents". being "narrow" minded sucks us into the un-real world of the true reality that is happening today, which is being open and true to to one's self. people that are narrow minded don't want to see the world that it is ,and will become. too sad.

Absolutely! Being narrow minded will eliminate a lot of interesting people, places and things from your life. If you can't be open to people who think differently than you, or ideas that run counter to what you think, you will miss out on a lot of interesting experiences. If you can't be open to new ideas you will be stuck in the same old rut. If people were not open to new ideas, we would still be sitting around in caves eating what ever we clubbed in the head for supper.

To be narrow-minded or open-minded to any extreme is not a healthy endeavor. The trick in life is to be CLEAR minded. being able to see and judge things on a non-biased basis in order to make an honest assesment of its validity. Perceptual filters that we acquire during our lives often makes it difficult to do this, however with practice and awareness, it can be done within a proficient degree, in my opinion.

Absolutely.
By being too narrow-minded, you refuse to believe your ideas are wrong even if there is evidence that they are. You also lose out on many wonderful things and people by refusing to see things in a different light.

Narrow mindedness is a problem. So is being too open minded ("fall for anything"). I guess wisdom is the key to knowing what to believe and what to question.

Its not a problem under one condition, that you find some narrow minded people and they should have the same narrow aspect or point of view.
But..... what are the odds?!!!!

It's all how you handle it... If you've discovered more truth or have greater convictions than those around you, it's good for you, but how you portray it to others is where the issue raises it's ugly head.
Are you patient and respectful with those you disagree with? Do you allow others to challenge and debate with you, or do you immediately discount them? Are you willing to allow 'iron to sharpen iron'?
