I do NOT want to use a mouse to do artwork at all. I know some can and bless them, for they are very talented. But I need to know how artists and animators draw n their computers....Is it those pads? But if it is isn't it uncomfortable to have to look at the screen while your hand is down below drawing lines you can't see your "pencil" (stylus) make? Or is there some sort of pad where you can actually see the lines you are making on the pad? Or do I just have to scan all my paper drwaings? I am curious about how animators and artists approach this.

Most do use a graphics tablet, like the ones manufactured by Wacom. Using it is simply a matter of practice and, at some point, it becomes as easy as using a pencil or pen on paper. It may help you to visualize the technique by remembering that a cursor moves on the screen BEFORE the mark being drawn appears.

While I don't have one, yet, the top of the line illustrators and designers use a system that actually allows them to draw directly on the screen, which is an even more natural feeling. I had a chance to try one out at a digital design trade show, a couple of years back. Dreamy feeling!

yes i used stylus. at first it's weird.. but you get used to it
if you keep doing it.
There is some pad that let you see the lines you're making right on the pad itself. It's called cintiq.
but it cost an arm and a leg to get one.

So i settle with tablet.
