I have a friend who lives in South Dakota. He is enrolled in High School and has no history with drugs, violence, etc. He's a perfectly fine guy. He turned 18 a little more than a month ago. Is it legal for his parents to kick him out on the street for no reason whatsoever? This isn't the first time they've kicked him out either. Last year (when he was under 18) his parents kicked him out, also for no reason. They recently let him move back in but now want him gone again. Basically, whenever his parents feel like it they want him gone. If it is legal for him to be kicked out, what kind of financial help and housing is he eligible for in SD?

Honestly, they kicked him out for no reason. His stepdad is an alocholic and his mom doesn't want to be bothered with anything but her own needs. His dad will get angry over something stupid (like not doing the dishes) and turn off the power and demand he leaves. Last time he was kicked out the day after thanksiving. Why would I come on here and lie? I swear to God, I'm telling the truth. Anyways, what kind of housing/financial help would he be eligible for?

Yes they can and it sounds to me like it's probably the best for him. His parents sound like losers. If he doesn't have a job since he's in school or doesn't make very much money I'm sure he will qualify for some type of government assistance.

He is not going to qualify for anything. If he was illegal, a women or a minority w. 3 kids yes. Single 18 year old male? It's not going to happen. Even if he did he would derail school by leaving.

He should speak to the counselor as there might very well be some rule regarding highschool students even though he is 18. But he is still 18.

If it was me I would do whatever it takes to stay until I finished school....... even if every moment of kissing butt was painful. In the meantime I would speak to a recruiter about joining the military. The very day that I qualified for graduation (ceremony not needed) I would pack my toothbrush and leave for bootcamp.

definite, dad and mom are criminal to blame for minors in common terms until eventually they attain the age of majority (18) and you have. i can't think of any determine making a wakeful determination to place a minor out until eventually there is a few historic previous you're no longer telling us.

I find it hilarious that when ever "kids" tell these stories, the parents are always acting for no reason what so ever.

I'm sure that there is a reason.

Regardless, your friend is 18. A legal adult in South Dakota.

Yes, they can kick him out. He should contact his high school guidance counselor to help him find programs that will help him complete school and get on his feet.

He is 18 so he can be kicked out. Bottom line - be a hostage to your parents or move out. It's really that simple.

Sure. At least the kid knows that his mom chose the step-dad over him. He shouldn't forget that.

Sorry, but I have a feeling he didn't get kicked out for "nothing". He is an adult now, so they probably have the right to get him out.
