Its a Kenmore Power Miser 10 and a Peerless Steel Oil burner. Those specifically are the choices installed already. Just dont know whats hooked up. Last owners did oil. They were also much older people, so I doubt very much research was done. They just did what everyone else did. They were there for 40yrs+

Natural gas is widely accepted in the industry as the most efficient in cost and effectiveness. Certainly that might depend in part on where one is located.

You mention two different things however. Heat and Hot water? And is this a house or an apt?

Oil Burning appliances/ IE: Boilers for steam; etc.: an expensive method; and less efficient than Electric which would be even more expensive. natural gas also burns cleaner; is self delivered; is safe; and is more easily serviced, by the appliance providers; than an Oil fired system; which only equates to Heat and Hot water. The natural gas also can be used in your cooking.

Certainly much of your expense depends on USE. 5 people bathing or showering once or more per day; keeping a thermostat at 80 degrees; will increase consumption and costs; no matter what system you choose.

2 years ago we heard that hot oil was the way to go, man were we told wrong. The electric bills ate us up. The next year we used gas that is central heat and air gas, (floor furnaces will clean your clock too) The gas bill was much lower than the electric bill for hot oil. If you have a good source for wood, wood burning stove with a blower is the best way to go. It's messier but wood last along time and doesn't cost as much, and if the power goes out you still got heat. Hope you can split wood it's some work involved there.

Couldn't begin to even take a guess. All heating fuel bills are going to be taking a big jump in cost this year.

Better wear lots of warm clothing.

Gas is much better and cheaper than oil when you factor in delivery of the oil.
