Everyone has excellent answers tonight! I too would go in, and hear what they have to say. If you quit ,unemployment will be almost impossible to get. Unless they have already told you that the next time it happens you will be fired, it may be that you will just get another warning or a suspension. On a larger scale, this is why women have such a hard time gaining full equality in the work place. It is always the woman who is expected to take off work when a child is sick, it is almost never asked of the man. When my kids would get sick at school, they always call me, never my husband, who actually works within a few minutes of the school! A single Mom has it even harder.

It is hard to know in advance that you are going to be terminated, especially when the employer drags this out. Your biggest problem is that absenteeism, even due to a sick child, is never OK. That is just the way things are in the US, parents do not make the laws. If you are terminated due to absenteeism, it is doubtful that you will be able to collect any unemployment benefits. While this depends on your particular state laws, almost every state views absenteeism as a legitimate reason for termination, or in legal terms "misconduct". You should also anticipate problems in getting another job, very few employers will hire someone who was terminated because they did not show up to work, no matter the excuse.
I do not understand "I want to say my piece too". Your employer has a legal and legitmate need to have all employees show up for work every day. Employers are not required to provide day care, time off for sick children, or any other benefits that are only directed at those with children. Having a plan to care for children, even when they are sick, is the responsibility of the parent. Showing up for work every day is the responsibility of the employee.
Since you do not know for sure if you are being fired, calling in sick or calling in 'I quit' is a cowards way out AND you may be tossing away an opportunity to work things out with your employer. Your employer may offer you an opportunity to resign, instead of quit, with a generic letter of recommendation or some other plan.
You need to attend this meeting, if for nothing else, to see what the employer says. If you want to keep your job you need to go in with a plan to care for this child when he/she is sick and an apology to the employer for breaking the rules. I can promise you that if you go into this meeting with the attitude that the employer owes you because you had a child, you will get nothing.

Go in and let them fire you if that is what they are planning to do. Just be certain that you do not sign anything that can be use to say that you quit so you can draw unemployment. If you quit you will not qualify for unemployment.
I would also just say to them I hope you never have to choose between a sick loved one and your job because if you do then you will be where I am now. But I guess people like you never have to make those type of choices because your family always comes after your job. Really kind of sad isn't it. You know there will always be other jobs but you only have one family and I pity the day you need someone to help you and no one is there because you were never there for them.
Walk out with you head held up high.
Good luck and God Bless

If I am in your shoes, I would still report for work. Then when they call you to hand you your walking papers, accept it with dignity. Then tell them the reason for missing some work and at the same time you can ask them a favor regarding reference and a good endorsement. HR practitioner's are also humans, I do believed that if you place all your cards on the table they will understand you and perhaps extend some help to you in any way they can.
My prayers goes to your sick child.
Good Luck

I would definitely go into work. It won't be easy, but if they fire you, you will most likely be able to collect unemployment. It's not as though you would be getting fired for some sort of crime or something of that sort. I don't know what state you live in but you will have an opportunity to explain why you were absent, etc. when you file the unemployment papers. Also, if you get turned down for unemployment you have the right to appeal.
It's not easy working and being a mom with young kids who do get sick at times. Try to hang in there. I would go in tomorrow and indeed keep my head up and explain what you need to say in a calm way. If you get fired, be sure to file for unemployment. You would probably get it.
Good luck to you. I'll be thinking of you!

You need to go in and face them. Do you have any kind of note from the Doctor for your child? If you do, you need to take that with you and explain your situation. I do not see why you should get fired for a sick child when you have no one else to watch him. They need to take the whole situation under consideration. Also you should ask them if they would rather you bring you sick child to work with you or what. I hope things turn out better for you. I know it is a tough job world out there, especially for mothers. Good Luck.

Go in there and hear what they have to say. Then tell them your side of the story. Don't cause a scene. Unemployment will contact them about the reason you no longer work for them. You will need their check. Also future employers will contact them so try to leave on a good note if possible. Instead, rant and rave to friends and family.

You posted this same question if it was legal, and it is.
Again, let them fire you, if you QUIT or if they say, "Sign here and resign and we won't fire you" (that is the same as quitting), you just flushed away your unemployment benefits.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN ANYTHING IF THEY FIRE YOU.
Unethical employers like to get people they fire to sign things when they are upset, and sometimes it's something petty, like a one-week severance, with a stipulation if you accept it you bar yourself from seeking unemployment, which is 100% legal.
You can get unemployment if you get fired for a sick child...like I said in your other post, if you didn't, you could be charged with child neglect.
