The American Medical Association is the principal professional group for physicians. Among other things, it lobbies with respect to proposed legislation which would affect medical practice.

Such organisations promote the profession for which they were established. I dont know the AMA.. but I can guess that it is the peak body representing and promoting the medical profession to parliament and the public. It is probably funded by its membership.

It will likely have a code of professional conduct which binds its members to a professional standard of service.

Of course, I'm guessing.. but pretty much all professions have an association.
