The same reason a real life person would. Greed, jealousy, hatred, insanity ... the list goes on and on.

One thing's for sure, out of all the list of possibilities: Fear. Fear is an overtaking emotion that comes from so many things. But mostly what makes a person turn to the "dark" side (trying not to sound too much like Star Wars) is jealousy. Sometimes a person may be so powerful, that in order to have that same power, you have to step to his side. And when you do so, you get lost in the darkness. It just simply swallows you, and you can never leave it unless shown the light to.
The dark side is very deceiving. At first glance you might think it has all the power in the world, and no one can take over, but in truth, joining the dark side is an act of cowardice. Some people join it because sometimes they think they could get killed by the dark side, so they join it to live.
There's an ongoing list of possibilities on why one would join the dark side, but that's only my opinion. I hope I helped! Interesting question, by the way! You've earned a star!

Many options. After all we are only human able to do good and wrong- . Depends on the history of the individual. May be caused by rage, resentment, erroneous thinking, psychological disorder. We have the duality, so we are permanently choosing between good and evil. (that in normal persons) Not clear what you are trying to ask and why u ask

I've seen medicine do this to people. It is real scary. Also brain injuries do this. My sister can be nice for awhile but gets tired of doing this and becomes irrationally evil and sticks it to everybody. Some others may change because of something that happens to make them loose their faith and they go to the alternate - evil.

The main reason that you see is that people think that they can't get ahead by playing by the rules, because everyone else is breaking them. Because they can't beat them, they join them.
Examples:
policemen taking bribes
athletes taking performance-enhancing drugs
not declaring income
lying on your resume

The dark side has cookies, and offers much better benefits for their employees such as better health care and dental. And of course it pays better.
