Wouldn't it be rough so they can grab the leaves?

Exactly right! Giraffes have rough tongues..and they are very long (about 17 inches) and can grasp and wrap around (prehensile) on the desired leaves or foods.

yeah i've fed a giraffe before and they have roughish tongues then i pet it and it smacked me right in the head! lol it hurt!
