depending on what type of vehicle you have. when you are driving down the road you will have a howling noise. Another way you could do it is lift the vehicle up on the corner that you think the problem comes from and spin the tire with your hand on the coil spring. you feel a vibration in your hand. well you have the vehicle lifted up put on hand on the very top and on on the very bottom and move it back and forth and see if there is any movement. Depending on if the wheel bearing is a seal bearing or a tapered bearing. If it is a a sealed bearing you can't inspect the actual bearing

With engine off, transmission in Neutral (you'll need to scoth (use a cinder block, etc.) the wheels that aren't jacked up to prevent the car from rolling off the jack), jack up the front (if it's a rear wheel drive) & spin each tire, by hand, and listen for crunching sounds. If' it's a Front wheel drive, do the reverse, with engine off and transmission in neutral of course.

what a bunch of crap. This is what you get from technicians.---- Jack your car up, take off the front wheels, remove the hubs and inspect the bearings. If your gonna do it do it right. I hope you know how to put them back
