I have a 2001 Ford Escort that just developed a loud, power sapping (hahah i know) exhaust problem. A shop looked at it and told me I needed the ? resonator maybe? pipe replaced. It was the longest piece before the muffler....didn't name it for me tho. Then told me the cost of the part was 299!!!! Im not sure the car is worth the total estimate he gave me for the work. I found a resonator pipe on AZ for 136, is it possible that this is not the piece that I need to replace? Thanks for the advice.

Go to a muffler / exhaust shop. If that is where you were try another. You could have a hole in the pipe (repairable) a loose flange where the pipe bolts to the manifold or a hole in the muffler. An exhaust shop can make the pipe if that is what you do need. Stay away from dealers and the big guys like midas and such. Find a n independent if possible.
