I've done many of the pathes available to me as a graphic designer. I've worked in design firms from the regular rank and file to an art director, I've freelanced, and I've also ran my own design business. Honestly it's a bit of a toss-up.
Yes, more of the money that you are paid will end up in your pocket if you freelance, but doing the work by yourself, or even within the scope of your own business, will mean that you will have to spend more of your own time on the managing and financial end of the business, thus the turn-around is much lesser. Yes, generally speaking the pay rate at design firms aren't always staggering, but it's consistent work with a high turn-around rate, and you aren't responsible for more the tedious sides of running a business.
Honestly, I believe what it boils down to is whether you enjoy your work or not. I know several people in my life that make more money then they can possibly do with, but they never strike be as being terribly happy in spite of that fact. While I am not terribly wealthy, I make a fairly decent living and after nearly 15 years I still enjoy what I do, so I'm not going to complain if I don't make as much money as the person next door.

In the work world, you are not going to earn more money unless you have management potential (so you won't be doing graphics). Computer graphics jockeys are a dime a dozen, but people who are good copywriters and sales people are a double threat. Being able to design a good working website is an excellent way to make more money.
You might consider getting creative and come up with a line of products you can sell over the web.
I have a friend who makes paintings the size of Japanest trading cards and sells them over eBay... there is a name for this genre that escapes me.
You get the idea.

freelance is probably the best way to go, but, what you need to do is create a website with samples of your work, and then get business cards and drop them off at local businesses.
Do local companies, startups mostly at first so that you can get word of mouth.
You may also search classified ads to see if people are looking for graphic designers and apply to do work with them.
Note, companies like kinkos, staples, and officemax hire graphic designers to do logos and stuff for their clients, so perhaps apply with these companies.
I am a web programmer, and I have graphic designers that I use when I need them, so, try to get in with some web programmers in your area so that you can trade business.
Look into getting involved with your local chamber of commerce as well, they are a good networking resource

The market is so flooded, the best way to earn a lot of money is to get a lot of connections that will use you and your skills. You have to be willing to work the system, and use those connections for your gain. Some people do get lucky without "knowing" people, but every successful graphic designer than I know has a big network of peers that they schmooze with, and trade business with.

I have been a graphic designer for almost 20 years....what type of job do you currently have and are you in or near a larger city? Most ad agencies pay highest dollar, then magazines or a big newspaper....you can go online to large magaznes or papers and see info about pay scale.....it is based on experience too.....I am starting to get into web design...thousands can be made for just doing one site and most tech schools offer 4-8 week class on that.

Put yourself on craigs list as a freelance graphic designer to try to build up clients. You may get some weirdos wanting you to build them a website for who knows what. Just research your client, but my friend generates a lot of good business from that site... Build yourself a website as well. Every client you have, ask them for a referral...

Quit your job as a graphic designer, get your CDL and become a truck driver for a reputable company like Yellow Freight.
Either that or become a Nurse...
