The original Constitution did not considerpolitical parties, naively believing that all Americans would always have the good of the nation in mind. So Jefferson and Burr got in, one from each party. Unworkable, led to violence and a duel between Federal officers.
The 12th changed that, so the Pres would have a Veep from his own party.

Originally the President was whoever got the most votes and the VP whoever got the 2nd highest number of votes. Let's assume we still used that system, and Obama and McCain were the next president and VP (but not necessarily in that order) their views on how things should be done are so different they would spend more time battling amongst themselves then accomplishing anything for the country. The 12th amendment was created to ensure the US would not have a president and vice president who were diametrically opposed on key issues.

Because there was a tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr (same party) for President in the elections, the House of Reps and Congress decided to add a 12th Amendent so that there would not be a major problem.

The Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution altered Article II pertaining to presidential elections. Article Two stated that the U.S. Electoral College would elect both the President and the Vice President in a single election; the person with a majority would become President and the runner-up would become Vice President. Problems with this system were demonstrated by the election of 1796 and, more spectacularly, the election of 1800. The Twelfth Amendment, proposed by the U.S. Congress on December 9, 1803 and ratified by the requisite number of state legislatures on June 15, 1804, required electors to cast two distinct votes: one for President and another for Vice President.

I read some of the article and this is what I get:
At first when there was a presedential election there was only one vote cast, and the runner up was vice president. I think it was changed so people could choose their running mates and like them.
