The concept of 'race' means nothing to me; I don't see color. Only if I needed bone marrow or a kidney would I think about only seeking someone biologically similar to me.
Ethnicity is supposedly different than race in that there are more groups identified as ethnic groups--they share similar values as well as physical characteristics because they came from the same region.
'Race' and 'ethnicity' mean something in US society because it is a way to keep people at each others' throats. Differences are fun, interesting and to be proud of, but as soon as it is used in an excessive manner or negative way, it becomes tiresome and counterproductive.

Both "race" and "ethnicity" are far too complex to answer appropriately and completely accurately on something like yahoo answers. These are concepts one should research on their own accord. But as to why they are important to modern US society, I am uncertain. Modern US is a sick ethnic and cultural cesspool and the agenda shoves the propaganda down the citizens throats further perpetuating it all. These concepts, though, SHOULD be of importance to all people in all nations, all over the planet. They are in most places, at least to some significant degree, excluding the West.

Race is a classification by physical features and ethnicity represents culture (food, clothing, religion, and customs) to me.
Why it is important? Could be pride, survival, commonality.
