Hi Rena,
The Native Americans believed that when we are born an animal's spirit enters us. It is its duty to keep us strong and wise and to teach us the attributes given to that Animal.
They believed all animals had lessons to teach i.e. the beaver is 'building, shaping, structure', the butterfly is 'transformation and grace'. Sometimes our spirit animal appears to us in our dreams, or if we dream of an animal, we perhaps need to look up the attributes given to that animal as it may be signifcant in our life now. Do some research on Animal Spirits on the internet. It's a fascinating read.

Edit: I've just read answers and I agree 100% with Valac Gypsy too: that interpretting an animal in a dream (as with any dream symbolism) will be personal to the dreamer and that is my belief too. Just thought I'd mention the 'Animal Spirits' as a point of interest!

In the symbology of dreams, an animal has no universal meaning. In fact, an individual might dream of--say--a snake, in one dream, & within the context of that dream, it could represent the duality of what it might in another dream of the same individual.
Generalities may be attractive, & even quite satisfying to some. As when a fortune teller (crafty they are!) observes an engagement ring, & tells the woman she is going to have a glorious marriage within the near future. The woman "likes" this prediction, & happily accepts it.
Dreams are incredibly complex. Symbols & imagery are never "supposed" to mean anything precise.
The dreamer can explore the message of their dream with neutral guidance, but never should the dream be "interpreted" or imposed upon by another.
Thus, an animal in "your" dream has a message only for you.

This is a very interesting question, Rena, and I am trying to think if & when I have ever had an animal in a dream. None recently, but I think I have dreamed of horses in the past.

Yes , it is a guiding force.
It depends on our relationship with that animal in daily life,
It reveals our inner charecter, prsonality, INTUTION, & instinctive nature. They come as messengers.
Each animal has it's own meaning.
I do not dream any animal.

I believe it to be a manifestation of our darker side. Take a snake, our low-down nature trying to emerge? The cat, our desire to "just not really care"? Here we go, the glorious bird in flight, could it be our desire to be dominant, be higher, be over everything? Just thinking, you know how it is!
