A lot is going to depend on the jurisdiction that had the vehicle, and their policies and maintenance systems! Some departments issue vehicles to officers, and they are allowed to use them when off duty (take home cars). Other departments use the vehicles around the clock, where one officer comes in and the next shift takes the car! Usually it is the large cities that use use the cars full time, and smaller and more rural areas will allow the officers the use of take home cars!

Each department does their own maintenance and repairs also. Some are much better at that than others. I know in my area that the cars from some departments are well taken care of, and the cars from others should be avoided at all costs!

Check out the car well and you can get a good vehicle!

Police cars usually have the best suspension components and heavy duty parts. Problem is although they've been well maintained they've pretty much been put through the mill.

Police cars are generally used 24/7 and do a lot of idling so they usually will have problems which is why most agencies only use them for a short time.

If you're mechanical and don't mind doing some overhauling they're generally a pretty good deal.

In CALIF. used police cars are very much used up because of the excess mileage. Maintenance is on-going and done regularly and carefully. It's the 25 hour days, and 8 days per week of usage that are so harmful.

Almost everything else stated here is correct, but here's one more thing to consider:

Usually the detective/unmarked/fire marshal cars are most sought after, because they've seen the lightest use.

No. Generally they have been driven hard, but they have been very well taken care off. With continued proper maintenance, most will have no trouble provide another 100K miles of service.
