Most of the time you will reach your destination without typing in www, but there are some pages that require the www. If you type in yahoo and hit Ctrl and Enter the browser will fill in the missing info.

The info on DNS is correct and the handling of www appears to be controlled by those that assign domain names but can be modified by the Web developer. There may be redirects handled by the DNS regarding www and some programmers say the browser handles the missing www.

nothing you can use the www or not should go to the same page

No difference as far as a user browsing goes, but no technical difference is dead wrong, but the DNS trick is right on though.

There is no technical difference. It is all just a matter of how they chose to set up their DNS entries. Either way works equally well.
