I read the book this weekend. The play is very different from the book. The book is much more dark and pessimistic (realistic? as far as the nature of man and the capability for cruelty and callowness). Also, the discussions on politics and good vs. evil can get complex. I had to put the book down after every few chapters and think about it (and rest my brain). A couple of the chapters I had to go back and read twice. There is alot of killing, violence, and sex in the book.
The play is true to the characters personality-wise but details are changed up (e.g., Nessa has working legs, but no arms in the book). Many of the events and outcomes are very different.

It's not a hard read. I found it to be a very interesting book. I loved the Wizard of Oz growing up and thoroughly enjoyed getting some back story on the characters. I think Gregory Maquire has some really intriguing ideas. I love how he 'twists' Elphaba's story and you feel for her even though she becomes the Wicked witch of the west. You get to see what drove her to what she became. I admit, there were some dull parts in the story that I struggled to get through (not that they were hard to read, just a little dull). But, I'm glad I persevered; it's a great book. I definitely recommend it!

If you're in 11 grade, you should be able to. It's not that hard, but certainly not for everyone who saw the musical...I'd say 13+.

It isn't hard to read. I just found it incredibly dull and boring. I bought them all at the same time and never even bothered with the others. Didn't like his style.

Not at all. It's a fairly recent book, so you shouldn't have any trouble at all with the language.
