I'm looking for covers that are not parodies but not sincere either. Two examples (find them on iTunes if you want):

"Stairway to Heaven" - Tiny Tim
"Theme from 'Shaft'" - Sammy Davis, Jr.

Looking for more in this vein.

PLEASE, don't suggest Weird Al - not what I'm looking for, and too obvious anyway.

Check out the "Golden Throats" CDs. You get treated to hearing Mae West doing "Light My Fire", "Stand By Me" by Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) and Leonard Nimoy singing "Proud Mary". You even get to hear Phyllis Diller's version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". They have to be heard to be believed.

cover of Elton Johns "Rocket Man" by William Shatner (captain Kirk of Star Trek)

Cover of Proud Mary by Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock of Star Trek)

also Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data on Star Trek TNG) put out an album of covers call "Old yellow eyes sings .... "something or other. What is it with these trek guys and singing? Must be lonely in outer space

check out a group called 'big daddy'...they released a couple of albums back in the 90s and their schtick was to take a song from today )'purple rain' for example) and redo it in the 50s style...

and even though they are considered a novelty act...some of the interpretations were actually pretty darn good ('dancing in the dark' for example)...
